Catalyst
THE CATALYST FOR WOODBURNING STOVES AND BOILERS!!!
A catalyst that is easy to install in the smoke exit of our BRUNO stoves.
This catalyst reduces the amount of harmfull materials that is caused by woodburning with at least 75%
Also the finedust will be reduced by half with the use of this catalyst.
This means that heating with wood can be much more clean. Especially in combination with our economical high renderment woodstoves.
Information:
Renewable and CO2 neutral energy sources such as wood and wood pellets are gaining more ground in the heating of homes. They save the fossil energy sources and are especially popular if the energy prices are high. Unfortunately, burning wood is not without problems for the air quality. The burning of wood in wood stoves is, despite all the well-meaning attempts, incomplete and there is still a large amount of smoke involved. This is due to the manual operation of the heater, the variations in the wood logs used (size of the logs, composition, mode of stacking, etc.) and the rapidly changing conditions during combustion (temperature, oxygen exchange, etc.). The smoke (not the steam!) includes various hydrocarbons and soot parts. The smell of the smoke can lead to complaints from the neighborhood. The incomplete burned particles can set off the inside of the chimney as flammable tar and creosote.
Around 90% of all the dust that is emitted from heating of homes comes from wood burning fireplaces, stoves and boilers. This substance contains about 95% of particulates (PM10). Due to the emission problems, more and more cities put restrictions on wood burning to reduce the amount of particles ad lower the risk of the occurrence of smog.
The catalystDe katalysator:
MoreCat Duisburg GmbH and the Institute for Energy and Environmental Technology (IUTA) have developed a catalyst made of durable, heat resistant and corrosion-resistant steel. The emissions, including the smell of wood smoke systems, will be greatly reduced with the use of this catalyst. An emission reduction of 75% and more is achievable. An additional positive effect is that the particulate emissions is reduced by more than 50%. The catalyst can be fitted with a special, patented, built-in grill. The grid will filter soot from the smoke which is then processed by the catalyst. Up to 90% of the particles will be captured.
Installation of the catalyst:
The catalyst system consists of a metal casing, the shape of a so-called bulb-dsik (see photo above), filled with catalytically active metal. The catalyst is integrated into a standard 500 mm long steel (2 mm) flue pipe and can be pushed into another pipe (with regeneration). The system is mounted as close to the heater and the furnace as possible so that the optimum operating temperature in the catalyst of 350 C is reached. The system can be mounted in a vertical, horizontal or inclined position and can be easily mounted in a current installation by replacing the lower flue with the system.
Instructions and maintenance:
The catalyst can be rotated in the flue. Installation of the catalyst creates a low pressure drop (about 5 Pa) which slightly reduces chimney draft. That could pose a problem when lighting the stove if the chimney is cold and there is little draft. Therefore there is a handle on the catalyst to turn it in a bypass position. In this mode, the smoke flows through the catalyst and the natural chimney draft is hardly affected. Once the fire is burning, the catalyst will be rotated a quarter in the operating position. The smoke will come in the catalyst. When burning wood in a wood stove more or less soot will occur. This soot will be burned catalytic (flameless) at a high temperature.
Part of the non-combustible fly ash –mineral parts from the wood- will stay behind because of the filtering action of the catalyst. This is beneficial for health but requires regular cleaning of the catalyst. For cleaning you lift the (cooled) catalyst from the flue and clean it under running water. The minerals that are flushed are not harmful to the environment. After replacing the catalyst, the heater can be used again. How often the catalyst should be cleaned depends on the so-called ash from wood, dust smoke, operation, design and service life of the heater. It is recommended to perform the cleaning simultaneously with emptying the ash pan or emptying the heater.
Installing the system at a moderate or poor draft from the chimney:
When there is a continued poor draft in the chimney this can probably be improved by the installation of a so-called AIRMASTER (revolving sphere vanes) on the chimney. Provided that there is sufficient draft, the installation of the catalyst system is possible.
Safety measures:
During the operation of the catalyst no special security measures need to be taken. It should be borne in mind that the stove, stovepipe, and the door handle of the catalyst are hot when using the stove.
Warranty:
In heaters which are equipped with a catalyst you may only use the appropriate fuels, like wood, wood pellets, coal or briquettes. Improper use of unsuitable fuels or burning can cause damage to the catalyst.
The operation of the catalyst is guaranteed by our quality control system. With normal use of the system the lifetime of the catalyst is at least two heating seasons.
The catalyst can be replaced as a single component. Exchange is also possible, in this case only the fill will be refreshed.
Purchase of the catalyst system:
The standard system comes in a black steel (2 mm) flue pipe with rejuvenation at the top or bottom of the pipe, length 500 mm and 150 mm in diameter. Other colors and sizes can be provided upon request.
